Supporting the Dignity Act in New York

New York’s state legislation raises awareness to bullying and harassment with the goal of creating an environment free of harassment and discrimination for all students.

Students are using technology daily to support online learning as well as socializing with the online world. Protecting students online has always been vital but is more important than ever with many schools using technology for learning. New York has state legislature in place to aim at protecting students against bullying.

What is the “Dignity Act”?

The “Dignity Act” (S 1987-B) aims to “afford all students an environment free of any harassment that substantially interferes with their education, regardless of the basis of the harassment, and free of discrimination based on actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, or sex.”

What does the “Dignity Act” require schools to do?

  • Establish protocols to respond to cyberbullying, harassment, bullying and discrimination, including designating a school official to receive and investigate reports, prompt reporting and investigation.
  • Take actions to prevent recurrences.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement when appropriate.
  • Develop a bullying prevention strategy.
  • Provide notice to all school community members of the school’s policies.
